It shaped the city skyline of Fulda for decades. Now the well-known JUMO tower is giving way to a new building. A 50-meter crane marks the temporary end of an era.
Fulda – It's a farewell in installments that became widely visible to everyone on Friday (April 24th): the dismantling of the JUMO tower has begun. For generations, the building not only served as a point of reference for the people of Fulda, but also as a reliable “weather station” above the roofs of the city thanks to its temperature display.
JUMO landmark in Fulda gets a successor
Dismantling the landmark is a logistical challenge, the company said in a press release. A mobile crane with a boom of around 50 meters was deployed to safely dismantle the massive components. This step became necessary after the tower had to be taken out of operation in November 2025 for safety reasons. A subsequent expert examination revealed that repairing the structure was no longer possible.
“The JUMO Tower has shaped our company and the cityscape of Fulda for many decades. This makes this decision all the more difficult for us,” explains Managing Director Dr. Steffen Hoßfeld. But the demolition is not a final farewell, but rather a new beginning: “We will rebuild this landmark and thus continue to set a visible example for our location.” The company plans to build a new tower at the same location. This should take up the tradition of the location and continue it in a modern form. When that will be is not yet clear.
While JUMO is making a clear commitment to the Fulda location with the planned new tower construction, there is currently less good news for another big name in the region: Edag slipped deep into the red in 2025 and will cut 1,300 jobs by the end of 2026 – jobs have already been lost at the Fulda location.
