Now it's private!
Markus Söder consistently keeps his private life out of the public eye. It is all the more unusual that his wife Karin Baumüller-Söder is now giving personal insights into their relationship in an interview – and talking about years together, family and solidarity.
“Love at first sight”
The Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (59) otherwise guards his family life like a national treasure. “Private stays private and home stays home” has been his mantra for years when reporters get too curious. His wife Karin Baumüller-Söder (53) now gave “Bunte” a rare look behind the scenes of the relationship – and openly raved about it. “I always knew that my husband was the right one for me,” emphasized the entrepreneur

“It was love at first sight,” continued Baumüller-Söder. In December 1999, long before Söder became CSU leader, the couple said yes. Their first daughter was born a year later, followed by their two sons in 2004 and 2007. “I think the family bond is very important. I love our marriage, I love the children that came from it,” Bavaria's First Lady told the magazine. The family is very close and speaks to each other on the phone several times a day.

Family life is sacred to Söder
Such insights from Söder are the absolute exception. The politician himself has repeatedly made it clear over the years where the red line lies for him. He confirmed in 2018 that there would “never be” a home story with his wife and children, despite countless requests. “I take great care to ensure that family remains family,” said the Prime Minister at the time.
“I want to continue to enable the children to have a normal life.” Even at the political highlight of his career, his swearing-in in the Bavarian state parliament, he left his offspring at home.

Söder also persistently hides details from everyday family life – such as who runs the household in Nuremberg. In 2022, however, he was forced to publicly counter persistent rumors about an alleged separation from his wife and a move out of their shared house in Nuremberg. “It’s all nonsense,” he told the Süddeutsche Zeitung. Such false reports are “not easy” for a family.

Some of his offspring have long been in the public eye themselves: Gloria-Sophie Burkandt (27), Söder's daughter from a previous relationship, works as a model and regularly appears at celebrity events. Selina Söder (26) from his marriage is successful as a dressage rider and runs a riding facility.
