When Schlüchtern's city center is transformed into the Hellen Markt next weekend, it will be the stage for an extraordinary art festival for the first time. The city combines traditional market activities with contemporary art in public spaces.
Schlüchtern – The art festival and the Helle Markt in Schlüchtern are held from Friday to Sunday (April 24th to 26th).. The art is deliberately designed as a triad: “Arrive. Take a deep breath. Revitalize.” Three terms that are reflected in the artistic works and experiences in the urban space.
It starts with the theme “Arrival”, staged by the Vienna Mask and Music Theater. Based in Ahlersbach for more than three decades, the ensemble with its expressive masks – created by artist Thomas Kippenberg – brings figures onto the street that accompany the market events with humor, playfulness and poetic lightness. In changing line-ups, lively encounters arise that combine the everyday and the strange in a surprising way and allow visitors to “arrive” at the festival in the truest sense of the word.

The second focus, “Breathing deeply,” finds its sensual expression in the installation “Getting a scent” by the Schlüchtern artist Gerwin von Monkiewitsch. A walk-in, oversized flower is being created in the former VR bank – a place of calm in the middle of the hustle and bustle. Visitors are invited to take a seat, pause and consciously perceive the moment.
A multi-layered artistic program, curated by Lena Skrabs and Paloma Sanchez Palencia from the “Flying Artists’ Room” at the Schlüchterner City School, ensures “revival”. Over the course of the week, new works will be created together with national and international artists and students. Classrooms become temporary studios, ideas are developed together, tested and further thought through. What began there will grow into various places in the public space during the Bright Market.

The artists involved include Sonder (Anton Steenbock and Peter Behrbohm), Ellinor Aurora Aasgaard and Zayne Armstrong, Irene Fresh, Janosch Holiday, Jasmine Parsley and Teenie from Common Frequencies. Her works range from performative formats to interactive installations to experimental sculptures and create new perspectives on the city and its spaces.
A special moment awaits visitors at the official opening of the Hellen Markt on Friday, April 24th, 6 p.m., in the town square: Not only will the market events begin here, but the art festival will also open at the same time – a start that allows the connection between market, art and encounters to be experienced directly and gives a first impression of the special atmosphere.
With the art festival, the city of Schlüchtern is consciously setting an example for cultural participation and the revitalization of the city center, according to the press release. The combination of international artistic impulses, local roots and the active involvement of young people creates a format that goes far beyond classic event structures.
The art festival is freely accessible during market hours. It was only at the end of March that art was celebrated in Schlüchtern: The Kulturwerk-Woche invited people to an artistic adventure under the motto “SpielARTen”.. (jk)
