The spectators didn't notice anything!
The leading role of Charlie Harper in “Two and a Half Men” was THE role par excellence in the acting career of Charlie Sheen (60). Between 2003 and 2011 he played the carefree bachelor in 177 episodes. But behind the cameras, Sheen's life was anything but carefree, as he describes in his biography, published April 16. Why even some of his dialogue on “Two and a Half Men” had to be changed.

Charlie Sheen's stutter resulted in “some word changes.”

“Be it the handling of weapons or the portrayal of a person who is currently falling in love – passionately translating a scene from a piece of paper is difficult enough,” writes Charlie Sheen in a chapter of his biography “The Book of Charlie Sheen” (Hannibal Verlag). “Not being able to articulate certain words or sounds should not be a problem,” it continues. What Sheen is referring to here: The “Two and a Half Men” star has had to deal with stuttering since he was a child – even while he was in front of cameras as an actor.

When Charlie Sheen first appeared for “Two and a Half Men” (stream on RTL+) When he was in front of the camera, he told the author Chuck Lorre about his “stuttering speech”. Lorre and his co-author responded with understanding and promised Sheen that they would “accommodate him in this regard”.

And that's what they did, as Charlie Sheen writes in his book. Right at the beginning there were “a few scenes” “where the monster attacked me”. But a simple remedy helped the “Two and a Half Men” star: those responsible for the sitcom quickly made “some word changes”.

Co-star Jon Cryer, who plays Charlie's brother Alan Harper in the sitcom, also helped Charlie Sheen out of a stuttering mess a time or two: “Jon was a champion with problems like this and saved me from my struggle once or three times by taking over the damn line in a flash.”

Stuttering lapses made Charlie Sheen “drink the way I drank”

It took a long time for Charlie Sheen to be so open about his stuttering with those around him. According to his biography, “Two and a Half Men” was the first production in which Sheen played his cards right from the start. In previous productions, however, he tried to hide his stuttering.

“That insecurity” that came with it was “one of the main reasons” “why I learned to drink the way I did,” Sheen writes in a chapter in which he remembers filming “The Red Tide” in 1983. “During the celebrations on the first day of filming,” Sheen had “one double whiskey after another (…) flowed down his throat,” which ultimately led to the actor crashing. As he explains, it had “to do with a specific scene” that Sheen was in front of the camera for that day. “A few seconds after Milius called his action, the stutter monster got stuck in my brain,” he explains. The alcohol loosened “the cramps and bonds” of stuttering.

About his now published book, Charlie Sheen says that he hopes it will serve as “a kind of call out to the world to make my 'brain delay' known.” “To take on a significant job in the future knowing that my new workplace is aware of the curse would be a gift like no other,” said the actor.
