US President Donald Trump increased his pressure on Iran with drastic words the day before his ultimatum expired. “The entire country can be taken out in one night, and that night could be tomorrow,” he said at a news conference in Washington at midday (local time).
The US President had given Iran an ultimatum to open the Strait of Hormuz, which is important for global oil and gas trade. After several postponements, he most recently set the deadline for Tuesday evening US East Coast time (2:00 a.m. CEST on Wednesday night).

Trump had announced attacks on energy facilities and infrastructure such as bridges if the country did not give in. In a speech to the nation last week, Trump even threatened to send Iran back to the “Stone Age.” Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains largely at a standstill.
