An 83-year-old in the Main-Kinzig district fell for a shocking call. The police were able to catch the suspected perpetrator, an 18-year-old, shortly after the crime.

Nidderau – On Wednesday, March 18th, civilian police forces in southern Hesse temporarily arrested an 18-year-old German. He is accused of gang and commercial fraud, as the Frankfurt Public Prosecutor's Office and the Southeast Hesse Police Headquarters announced. The arrest was preceded by a so-called “shock call”.

An 83-year-old woman from Nidderau received a call from an unknown woman on Wednesday afternoon. She pretended to be her daughter and tearfully claimed that she had killed a woman and seriously injured her child in an accident. “A male person then called the victim,” the press release said.

The fake police officer said that the callee's daughter had to be taken into custody because of the accident. However, a security deposit of 25,000 euros could prevent this. The woman suffering from dementia believed the callers. She explained that she had little cash but had jewelry and gold at home.

The male caller asked her to put the valuables in a bag and hand them over to someone who would take them to the Hanau public prosecutor's office. “In fact, there was never any such accident,” said the public prosecutor's office and the police. The accused is said to have gone to the victim's address on Wednesday evening.

He accepted the loot worth at least 5,000 euros. Shortly afterwards he was arrested as he walked away from the crime scene. At the request of the Frankfurt Public Prosecutor's Office, the Hanau district court issued an arrest warrant against the 18-year-old on Thursday (March 19). He has been in custody ever since.

The investigation is ongoing, it said in conclusion. However The district court in Fulda recently heard a strange case of shoplifting. The 32-year-old man was given a suspended sentence. Two incidents were discussed – both sequences of events were somewhat strange.
