The regional project of the district job center of the Fulda district in Eiterfeld has paved the way for job seekers into the profession – and helped a Ukrainian get his first job in Germany.

Eiterfeld – The district job center of the Fulda district has completed the regional project in Eiterfeld. Customers of the job center had the opportunity to find a new job close to home. Illia Bohoiev is one of the participants who successfully completed the project. He now works full time as a caretaker at Ge Huhn Petersen.

“We are very satisfied with the regional project in Eiterfeld,” sums up Markus Vogt, head of the municipal labor market specialist service. In the on-site voluntary project, the eleven participants were prepared for job interviews and supported in preparing application documents and looking for a job in Eiterfeld and the surrounding area. Help was also available for personal challenges – for example with child care, debts or language hurdles. There were also joint company visits and a lot of exchange between the participants.

“The result speaks for itself: two participants are now working full-time, one person has started a mini-job and another person has started training. There were also further job interviews afterwards, some of the results of which are still pending. For us, the project in Eiterfeld was a success,” explained Marlene Most from the district job center's employer service, who was in charge of the project.

37-year-old Illia Bohoiev took part in the project and left it early – for good reason: Since September he has been working full-time as a caretaker and warehouse worker at Ge Huhn Petersen in Mackenzell. He applied there during the project and got the job straight away. “The preparation for the project was simply good. I knew what questions would come in the interview and was able to respond well to them. That was very helpful for me,” says Bohoiev, for whom the job is the first in Germany.

In 2023 he fled Ukraine with his wife and daughter. It was immediately clear that he and his wife wanted to work quickly: “We want to develop ourselves and no longer be dependent on the job center.”

In the Ukraine, Illia Bohoiev first worked as a salesman in a large hardware store and then as a refrigerator fitter. “But I trained as an accountant. Back then it was difficult to get a job in that field. In addition, in Ukraine it is very common for people to complete training or study and then work in a completely different profession. You work where people are needed. That is completely different than in Germany,” said the 37-year-old, looking back on his time in Ukraine.

How an aid project paves the way into the German job market

Since things work differently in Germany, he was happy to take part in the voluntary project. “We're new here and don't know the best way to find a new job. In Ukraine I had a lot of friends who I could just call and ask about work. Someone always knew someone who was looking for an employee. But it doesn't work like that in Germany. I got help with everything in the project, which was just good,” said the 37-year-old.

Specifically, he learned about the entire application process in the project, further improved the language, practiced interviews and created application documents. He also met new people in Eiterfeld through the project. This is also a big plus point for Mayor Dana Hauke, who supported the project: “We want people here in Eiterfeld to feel comfortable, to find work close to home and to be well integrated into our market town.” Like the Bohoiev family, who have lived in Eiterfeld for three years and don't want to leave there anymore.

He is particularly pleased that Illia Bohoiev has now found a job: “I work with wood and metal, repair things, earn good money and am learning German better every day from my colleagues. The processes, equipment and tasks are new to me, but I really enjoy the work.”
