In Fulda and the surrounding area there will be difficult majority negotiations after the local elections, predicts Andreas Ungermann, editor of the Fuldaer Zeitung. His comment on the trend results verbatim:

The ballot papers in the Fulda district, the cities and municipalities have not yet been completely counted. With multiple crosses and deletions, there will still be shifts towards the final result. The trend from Sunday evening but shows one thing very clearly: in many places, the CDU in particular will have to look for new constellations.

Comment on the local elections: CDU faces a tough struggle

The fact that the Christian Democrats, for example in the district and city of Fulda as well as in Petersberg, where the Union has even made gains, and Neuhof will have to invest more energy in obtaining majorities in the future is not just due to their own performance. At least in the district they are enough for this one Local election the percentages lost to see this alone as the reason for alliances that are difficult to forge. The loss of voice has been going on for a long time and is now clearly reflected in practice.

However, the fact that the constellations will be difficult is primarily due to the performance of previous coalition partners and the increasing number of parties and political groups over the past few years. This circumstance has often led to a tough struggle in the election period that is now coming to an end. It is clear that this will not be any easier with future alliances.

In the city and district, the Christian Democrats, as the strongest faction, would only mathematically have one option for a two-party alliance: The AfD, which has gained a lot of votes, proudly announced on election evening that it was ready to work with the CDU. Whether the Union will actually raise this is a completely different matter.

The Christian Democrats' rejection of a coalition was already very clear during the election campaign. Dag Wehner for the city and Thomas Hering for the district CDU also reiterated this course on election evening. So all that remained were three-way constellations with different compositions, or negotiating for majorities depending on the topics and projects. Local politics remains exciting.
