The municipality of Ehrenberg has lifted the boiling water requirement for drinking water in the Wüstensachsen and Melpert districts. However, the water will continue to be chlorinated for the time being.
Ehrenberg – Update from March 10th, 10:21 a.m.: The Rhön community of Ehrenberg announced on Tuesday morning (March 10th) that boiling drinking water in the districts of Wüstensachsen and Melpert is no longer necessary from now on. “The chlorination is effective and the sterility has been confirmed,” it said.
“The water is perfect again and can be used as usual.” On February 17th, the municipality of Ehrenberg discovered that the limit values for coliform bacteria and intestinal enterococci were exceeded during inspections of the drinking water systems and then initiated the water chlorination (see initial report from February 17th below).
Ehrenberg lifts the boiling water requirement
So now the boiling water requirement for drinking water has been lifted. In coordination with the Fulda Health Department, chlorination will continue to be carried out for the time being until further follow-up tests also produce no complaints. The municipality of Ehrenberg announced that it would immediately announce as soon as the chlorination was lifted.
You should still not use chlorinated water for aquariums, as chlorine can be harmful to the sensitive organisms in the tank. If you have any questions, citizens can contact the Ehrenberg town hall on (06683) 960110.
First report from February 17th, 12:13 p.m.: Due to contamination in the pipe network, citizens in two districts of Ehrenberg, namely Wüstensachsen and Melperts, must now boil their drinking water. At the same time, chlorination begins.
On Tuesday, the municipality of Ehrenberg discovered that the limit values for coliform bacteria and intestinal enterococci were exceeded during inspections of the drinking water systems. In coordination with the Fulda Health Department, the drinking water will be chlorinated as early as possible. The districts of Wüstensachsen and Melpert are affected. A few months ago there was also a boiling water requirement in Flieden.
Chlorination is intended to ensure “that consumers are supplied with hygienically perfect water at all times,” as the municipality reports. The chlorine dosage is adjusted so that residual levels of a maximum of 0.3 milligrams of chlorine per liter are achieved. According to the municipality, this concentration corresponds to the limit value set in the drinking water ordinance and is not harmful to health.
Drinking water in desert Saxony and Melperts contaminated
However, as a precautionary measure, the municipality recommends that sensitive people not use the chlorinated water for drinking or preparing food until the disinfection measure has been completed. The chlorinated water is unsuitable for aquariums.
Until sufficient chlorine disinfection of the affected network areas has been ensured, residents are advised to boil their drinking water to a boil (around 100 degrees Celsius) as a precaution. Then let it cool down for about ten minutes before using it again. According to the municipality, commercially available kettles are well suited for this measure. The municipality wants to inform the population in good time about the lifting of the boiling water requirement.
At the same time, Ehrenberg (Rhön) said it “immediately started researching the causes”, as there were numerous possibilities for the entry of contaminants into the drinking water system. In this context, the municipality points out that connections between industrial water and drinking water systems are not permitted. Anyone who uses rainwater or other water sources must ensure that industrial water systems are not connected to the drinking water system. In addition, the operation of industrial water systems must be reported to the Fulda Health Department.
As soon as the boiling recommendation is lifted and chlorination can be stopped, the municipality of Ehrenberg (Rhön) wants to announce this immediately. According to the announcement, if you have any questions, the municipality's town hall is available on 06683/9601-10.
