From March 16th things will be tight around Freiensteinau-Gunzenau in the Vogelsberg district. Road renovations mean full closures and diversions.
Freiensteinau – Traffic is still flowing smoothly on the country roads L3079 and L3181 between the Gunzenauer Kreuz and the Freiensteinau district of Reichlos in the Vogelsberg district. From Monday (March 16th) this will change due to upcoming work. The through town of Gunzenau will also be renovated.
The Hessen Mobil road administration has announced a full closure from mid-March. The country road between Gunzenauer Kreuz and Reichlos is being renovated over a total length of 2.9 kilometers for 1.24 million euros. The through town of Gunzenau is also being renovated.
Complete closure in the Vogelsberg district: roads near Gunzenau are being renovated
This was only rebuilt around 20 years ago. However, the roadway is made of a material that was used as a model at the time – and apparently no longer meets expectations. According to a press release from Hessen Mobil, the two state road sections are characterized by various road damages.
A renewal is “therefore sufficiently necessary. Due to the narrow width of the road, there is no alternative to a full closure during construction work. In order to reduce the restrictions for road users as much as possible and, in particular, to continue to guarantee accessibility to Gunzenau, the construction project will be carried out in several construction phases (BA)”.
The first construction phase concerns the L3181 from the Gunzenauer Kreuz up to and including the “Raiffeisenstrasse” town thoroughfare and the “Horstweg” junction. Work on this route is expected to be completed within five weeks.
This is then followed by the BA 2, which includes the L3079 “Jossaer Straße” in the direction of the Hosenfeld district between the “Horstweg” confluence and the L3181 “Reichloser Straße” confluence and the L3181 “Reichloser Straße” from the “Horstweg” confluence to the exit of the town in the direction of Reichlos. In this area the closure is given as four weeks.
Completion of work in July 2026?
Then follows the third and longest construction phase on the L3181 from the Gunzenau exit to the Reichlos entrance. Eight weeks are planned for this. A diversion will be signposted for regional traffic, i.e. for those road users who only use the country roads mentioned for transit.
During construction phases 1 and 2, traffic will be routed over two alternative routes: one via Weidenau and Freiensteinau and the other via Metzlos and Nieder-Moos. In construction phase 3, the diversion will then take place for both directions exclusively via Freiensteinau to and from Weidenau.
If the construction work can be carried out as planned, the work is scheduled to be completed in July 2026. From March 9th, Marktstrasse in Eiterfeld will be completely closed. Commuters between Thuringia and Bad Hersfeld have to take detours for months.
