“According to initial assessments, part of the building is even in danger of collapsing,” reported police spokesman Thomas Leipold. The fire broke out on Thursday afternoon around 5 p.m. in the building on Im Unterfeld street. The fire then quickly spread through the roof structure.
Several residents alerted the fire department because of the heavy smoke. The fire brigade worked for hours to extinguish the flames and prevent them from spreading further. According to the police, no people were injured. The residents were able to get to safety in time.
The police provisionally estimate the damage to the building at up to half a million euros. “In addition, there is the previously unquantifiable value of the meat products stored in the hall, which can no longer be marketed as a result of the fire,” said the police spokesman.
The cause of the fire is still unclear. The criminal police are investigating indications that a technical defect in a refrigeration unit may have played a role. However A sauna caught fire in Gersfeld in the Rhön on the same day. Two people were injured. There was a lot of damage.
