Early commitment: Hanau and the Main-Kinzig district are already securing their cooperation beyond 2028 to strengthen educational pathways.
Hanau – Despite Hanau's district freedom Mayor Dr. Maximilian Bieri and District Administrator Thorsten Stolz clearly support the continuation of their cooperation in the school sector. The aim of a meeting on February 26th was to ensure the mutual acceptance of students beyond 2028. The relevant negotiations are scheduled to begin in the course of 2026.
Educational cooperation for Hanau and the Main-Kinzig district
The numbers illustrate the relevance of this partnership for the entire region: an average of around 2,375 young people from the Main-Kinzig district commute to Hanau high schools or the Otto Hahn School each school year. Conversely, the integrated comprehensive school Heinrich-Böll-Schule is an important contact point for over 370 Hanau students. “The reality of our educational region does not end at administrative borders,” emphasizes Bieri.
Strategies against increasing student numbers
In view of the growing number of students, both partners are focusing on expanding capacities. The Main-Kinzig district follows a three-pillar strategy:
– Establishment of an upper level at the Bertha von Suttner School (Nidderau)
– Expansion of the Albert Einstein High School (Maintal)
– Continuation of the cooperation with the city of Hanau
Hanau, in turn, is developing the Hessen-Homburg school center into a cooperative comprehensive school and significantly expanding the Lindenau school.
The school authorities want to create trust through early communication. “A good cooperation means profit for both sides – and above all profit for the young people. Regardless of whether they come from Hanau, Maintal or Erlensee: They can develop freely and strive for the educational qualification that suits them,” is the joint conclusion of Bieri and Stolz.
