Unemployment in the Fulda district rose slightly in February for seasonal reasons, but at the same time the need for skilled workers in the region remains high.
Fulda – As the February report from the Fulda employment agency shows, the number of unemployed increased compared to January by 53 people, the rate rose from 4.0 to 4.1 percent. At the end of the month, 5,288 people were registered as unemployed. This means that the Fulda district continues to have the lowest unemployment rate in Hesse; the national average is 6.1 percent. The increase typical of the winter months affects almost all groups of people, but especially younger people under the age of 25: their number increased by 13.4 percent to 678.
Compared to February of the previous year, 206 more people were unemployed in the region, which corresponds to an increase of 4.1 percent. Here too, younger people are disproportionately affected, their number increasing by 12.3 percent. Unemployment among those over 55 has also increased significantly: 1,526 older people are currently registered as unemployed, 5.7 percent more than a year ago.
The employment agency counts more unemployed people in the Fulda district in February
The figures from the employment agency and the job center have developed differently. 2,371 people were registered as unemployed at the employment agency in Fulda, 335 more than in February 2025, an increase of 16.5 percent. The job center in the Fulda district, however, recorded a decline: 2,917 unemployed people are currently registered there, 4.2 percent fewer than in the same month last year.
“Many of the people registered as unemployed at the agency still do not have completed training. An important lever is therefore further training,” explains Katharina Henkel, chairwoman of the management of the Bad Hersfeld-Fulda employment agency. According to the agency, there are good chances of taking up employment despite the weaker economy.

The employment agency supports companies in finding solutions for employing people with disabilities. Human resources managers can receive advice and specifically recommend potential applicants for jobs and training positions. The contact person for the Fulda region is Monika Krebs, telephone (0661) 17-149.
The employment agency's employer service currently has 1,423 vacancies to fill in the Fulda region, 76 more than in February of last year. Henkel sees one central challenge in meeting the need for skilled workers and appeals to companies to use all available potential and focuses on one group of people in particular: “Why not hire a person with a disability? Sometimes a special chair or special software is enough to compensate for a physical impairment. It's about finding solutions – together with us.”
