Following information from Germany and Great Britain, the Dutch police are investigating suspected abuse reminiscent of the case of Gisèle Pelicot. During searches, the police found, among other things, weapons and narcotics.
Dutch police have arrested four men on suspicion of drugging and then raping women in their immediate vicinity. According to the police, the women were the men's partners. The police in Rotterdam said the abuse was filmed and the recordings were distributed. Another four men are suspected of being involved in the abuse or distribution of the images. Further arrests have not been ruled out.
Computers, cell phones and USB sticks were confiscated during house searches. Weapons and narcotics were also found. The operations took place last week, but were only announced now because the investigation is still ongoing, it was said.
The police have not yet provided any information about the possible number of victims. The recordings are currently being evaluated and the identities of the women are being determined. Police did not release any information at the time of the crimes.
Such a crime has major psychological consequences for the women, the police said. “The news that your partner or an acquaintance may have drugged you, perhaps even raped you, or wanted to, can turn your life completely upside down.”
The suspects are said to be between 21 and 51 years old and come from different areas of the Netherlands. According to the police, what exactly they are said to have done is still being investigated in more detail.
The police got on the trail of the case following tips from colleagues in Germany and Great Britain. They discovered closed groups on social media. “Information was exchanged about how best to drug women – or rather, one's own partner – and then have sex with them,” Gerben Cabbort from the Rotterdam police special sexual violence unit told radio station NOS. He spoke of a “new phenomenon”. The case is reminiscent of the French woman Gisèle Pelicot, who was repeatedly drugged, abused and offered to rape dozens of strangers by her then husband Dominique over almost ten years.
