On Tuesday we were still working hard and the L'Unico logo was unveiled with great joy. From Wednesday there will be ice cream with a genuine Italian recipe on the corner of Marktstrasse and Unterm Heilig Kreuz.

Fulda has a new address for everyone who likes it sweet and Italian: As of today, pistachios, vanilla, apples and the like are served over the counter at the parish church. “L'Unico” has opened a gelateria.

Fulda – The well-known Fulda pizzeria “L'Unico” has opened its ice cream parlor in the premises of the former Most candy store – bringing another piece of Italian ice cream culture to the heart of the city center. Even days before the opening, the store was being screwed, assembled and decorated.

New ice cream parlor in Fulda: “L'Unico” opens at the town parish church

Together with craftsmen, founder Claudio Ravalli and managing director Toykan Can lent a hand themselves. The highlight came on Tuesday (June 2nd): the new lettering “L'Unico” was unveiled under the gaze of passers-by. The tension of the past few weeks was no longer noticeable to those involved – instead there was visibly good spirits and anticipation for the start.

For Ravalli, the new gelateria is a project close to his heart. The native Sicilian has been living in Fulda for 50 years and relies on traditional Italian production with the Fuldaer Can. “We work without ice cream pastes. Each variety has its own recipe and its own base,” explains Ravalli.

Ice cream pastes are industrially prepared concentrates that serve as the basis for various flavors in many ice cream parlors. At L'Unico, however, each flavor is made individually. Flavorings and colorings are completely avoided. This means: “For us, vanilla is not yellow at all, apple is not green,” explains Ravalli. The recipes come directly from Italy.

The idea for the ice cream parlor came about last year. Since then, “L'Unico” on Haimbacher Straße has been producing and selling its own ice cream – with great success. “The ice cream was very well received,” reports Can. It quickly became clear that the demand was greater than the existing options. An additional location became necessary.

Pizzeria operators prevail against more than 100 competitors

With the new gelateria, the company, which now looks back on 25 years of experience, is taking the next step. It was by no means a given that the area at Unterm Heilig Kreuz was chosen. “We prevailed against more than 100 competitors for this location,” reports managing director Toykan Can.

And what about the competition? There are already several popular ice cream parlors around the new location. The operators are therefore not worried. “No, don’t worry,” say Ravalli and Can with a smile. The city center offers enough space for different concepts.

After Hesse day The gelateria will also have an outdoor terrace. Then the guests can enjoy their ice cream directly on the square – with a view of the hustle and bustle in the heart of the city and perhaps a little touch of Italy in the middle of Fulda.

The ice cream parlor is not the only new gastronomic opening in Fulda: in the past few weeks there have been around at the Buttermarkt there is both the Calido coffee house as well as the vegan Café Mint opened their doors. That's what it has for Trade is becoming increasingly difficult, with business closings becoming more frequent, especially in May.
