Play it safe – but do it right!
In an emergency, the little ones have to rely on the car seat. This is the case for many, as the current joint test by ADAC and Stiftung Warentest now shows. But two models fail completely in the crash test – and are therefore life-threatening!

Up to what age is a child seat required?

If you want to take children with you in the car, you must ensure that they are properly secured. They are allowed to do so according to the law up to a height of 1.50 meters or up to twelve years of age Only travel with a suitable child seat.

In order to cover the range from babies to the 1.50 meter mark or age limit, several seats are often required. The ADAC and Stiftung Warentest have recently looked at what they are good for: 26 baby seats and seats in a price range of around 65 to 578 euros were put to the test. In addition to safety and operation, it was also about ergonomics and possible pollutants.

First the good news: With six baby seats or seats, almost a quarter of the test field scored “good”, and more than half (16) received a grade of “satisfactory”. In addition, no environmentally harmful PFAS (“forever chemicals”) were found in any of the child seats tested. According to the information, almost every third seat was affected in the last test.

These are the best car seats in the test

When it comes to baby seats, the ADAC particularly praises it Foppapedretti Disk Infant (368 euros). In combination with its Isofix station (Tech i-Size) he achieved a grade of 1.9. It is one of only two seats that received at least a good rating in every category. Even without the station, the model (then 199 euros) received an overall rating of “good” (2.2).

Tip: Anyone who buckles up a baby seat without an Isofix station with the vehicle belt should ensure that the belt runs correctly, according to the ADAC. Because it happens again and again “that the shoulder and lap belts are swapped and the seat cannot provide its full protective effect in the event of an accident.”

The models for children up to around 1.5 years old are also “good” (2.4). Silver Cross Glide Plus 360 (259 euros) – the second model with at least one good grade in every category.

When it comes to models for small children and older children, the car club highlights two models from the manufacturer that were rated “good”. Cybex out: the Sirona Ti for 480 euros and that Pallas G3 for 260 euros. Both are graded “2.5”. Also that one Kinderkraft Junior Fix 2 i-Size (75 euros) for children over one meter tall is graded this way and also gets a “good”.

That's why the test bottom lights are so dangerous

The ADAC had already warned against a seat in the test field before publication. In this model for 145 euros for children up to around 1.5 years old, the seat can tear out of the base station and be thrown uncontrollably through the vehicle, which is the result of the frontal crash. This threatens serious injuries and the seat is “life-threatening,” according to Stiftung Warentest. It therefore fails with “poor” (5.5).

Important to know: The model is a group of identical child seats that have the approval number E8 0313715 carry and are sold under different names – for example as Car seat Isofix Top Tether 360 from Kidiz or 946i from Xomax. In addition, the baby seat also failed Kinderkraft Mink Pro 2 plus base station Mink FX2 (grade 5.5) in the accident test.

“Anyone who has already purchased one of the affected seats should no longer use it immediately and contact the relevant provider,” advises Stiftung Warentest.

The three “sufficient” models were downgraded because they were only sufficiently safe or were relatively complicated to install; a hazardous flame retardant was detected in a high concentration in one of the covering materials.

Be sure to test child car seats in a specialist retailer

Anyone who wants to buy a child seat should first find out about the different models and their features, according to the ADAC. The best way to do this is at a specialist retailer, where you can try out the products with your children and in your own car. The ADAC generally advises against “blind buying” on the Internet.
