Haunetal – An unknown driver caused around 10,000 euros worth of damage to a gated level crossing in Haunetal and then fled.
The incident occurred on Monday (May 18) at around 5:25 p.m. on the B27. As the Bad Hersfeld police station reports, the driver of a white BMW was reportedly traveling from the direction of Haunetal-Neukirchen and wanted to turn right onto the L3471 in the direction of Haunetal-Wehrda. He didn't pay attention to the level crossing immediately behind the junction with traffic lights and full barriers that were already lowering on both sides.

When the car was in the middle of the level crossing, the barriers had already lowered completely, trapping the vehicle. The driver then backed up to clear the tracks as much as possible. According to the police, the train dispatcher became aware of the situation via camera surveillance, stopped train traffic and opened both barriers.
The unknown driver took advantage of the situation and then drove away in the direction of Haunetal-Wehrda. A technician from the operator of the barrier system who was called in later discovered material damage to the system amounting to around 10,000 euros, but the functionality remained intact.
