The Vogelsberg celebrates its blooming natural treasures with its mountain hay meadow festival. The ninth edition takes place in Schotten-Michelbach at the end of May.
Schotten – Schotten-Michelbach becomes a lively natural stage: At the 9th Mountain Meadow Festival on Sunday, May 31st, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the focus is on the rare biodiversity of the mountain hay meadows – in direct interaction with traditional agriculture, which can be experienced by the whole family. The festival takes place in late spring to show the mountain hay meadows in their full bloom.
Since 2013, the mountain hay meadow festival has been traveling through the region in order – as the Vogelsbergkreis says – to draw attention to the value of these “oasis of biodiversity”. Since around half of all Hessian mountain hay meadows are located in the Vogelsberg, the district has a special responsibility for the preservation of this natural treasure. The most recent mountain hay meadow festival attracted hundreds of interested people to the Hälsberg between Maar and Reuters in 2024.
Vogelsberg invites you to the mountain hay meadow festival in Schotten
In Schotten-Michelbach, the characteristic mosaic landscape of grasses and herbs forms the backdrop, in which, with a bit of luck, you can even see the local red kite. According to the Vogelsberg district, the openness of this landscape is inextricably linked to agricultural use – without careful management, the valuable areas would become overgrown.
In order to celebrate the holiday together, numerous actors work hand in hand. The organizer is the Vogelsbergkreis with the Office for Economic Affairs and Rural Areas in cooperation with the city of Schotten and the major nature conservation project Vogelsberg. The festival is supported by the Lauterbach brewery and the local company “Westernworld Weide & Stalltechnik”. The organizational backbone on site is formed by the Michelbach association made up of the volunteer fire department, carnival club and the support association of the town of Michelbach.
Regional specialties take care of your physical well-being: visitors can expect, among other things, bratwursts from the Hampel organic beef farm, vegetarian offerings and bakery cakes. On the grounds, cattle, goats and sheep demonstrate the practice of pastoralism. In addition, numerous market stalls offer local products and “Vogelsberg ORIGINAL” products.
The technical program includes guided tours on botany, ornithology and herbology. As the Vogelsberg large-scale nature conservation project announces, its team is demonstrating the identification program on site using the HeLawi app. Young naturalists can look forward to a hay bouncy castle or take part in tours with a team of goats.
According to Vogelsbergkreis, the Vogelsberger Vulkan-Express (line VB-93), which serves a specially designed special stop directly at the festival site, ensures a relaxed journey. Parking spaces are also available in the immediate vicinity. The official opening will take place at 11 a.m. District Administrator Dr. Jens Mischak, State Secretary Michael Ruhl and Scottish Mayor Benjamin Göbel. Admission to the Bergmähwiesen Festival in Schotten-Michelbach is free.
