In the Vogelsberg district, an above-average amount of rubbish ends up in the yellow bin. The Dual System would now like to check this together with the ZAV and call for more attention when separating waste. Because proper separation saves money for everyone.

Vogelsbergkreis – “A toilet seat does not belong in the yellow bin,” says Johanna Boß, office manager at the Vogelsbergkreis Waste Management Association (ZAV), in plain language and calls on the citizens of the district to actively ensure that household waste is properly separated and disposed of.

This not only makes life easier for waste management, but also saves costs and ultimately protects the wallet of the fee payer. A nuisance are so-called incorrect fillings, i.e. waste in the wrong garbage can. Here the Vogelsberg district has come into the focus of the so-called dual system, which collects and disposes of packaging waste next to the ZAV's public waste collections.

In the Vogelsberg district, 48 kilograms of waste per citizen are collected in the yellow bin every year, which is well above the national average of 32 kilograms. That's why the Vogelsberg bins are now being scrutinized, particularly intensively in Wartenberg next week. If the contents are not permitted, the bin will not be emptied and will receive a sticker.

Citizens are encouraged to correct the errors through subsequent sorting. “The aim is to sensitize local citizens to proper waste separation,” says the selection of the Vogelsberg district in the nationwide campaign. Wartenberg's draw for the particularly intensive inspection is related to the specified calendar for emptying the yellow bins.

The Vogelsbergkreis, together with the disposal partners and the “Waste separation works” initiative of the dual system, is calling for better waste separation. Since 1991, the dual system has been a second disposal system alongside the public one, with which retailers and the packaging industry prevented the introduction of a packaging tax. Customers pay the fees for this when purchasing the items. There are various companies such as “Green Dot”, which in turn tender the collection of rubbish to waste collection companies like ZAV.

For waste collection in the Vogelsberg district there is the residual waste bin, which also fits the toilet lid when smashed, the organic bin, the paper bin and the yellow bin. There are no recycling bins or recycling centers. But used glass collection containers, bulky waste collection, hazardous waste collections, green waste collection points. A waste calendar provides information online about what belongs where.

What belongs in the yellow bin?

According to the ZAV, the basic rule is: Only empty packaging that is not made of paper, cardboard, carton or glass belongs in the yellow bin – for example plastic packaging such as yoghurt containers or foil, metal packaging such as tin cans or aluminum lids, composite packaging such as beverage cartons. Containers should be completely emptied but do not need to be rinsed. Lids and screw caps should be separated from cans, tubes and cups if possible. Paper packaging components belong in the waste paper. Organic waste and leftover food, diapers and hygiene products, glass, paper and cardboard are not included (although the pizza box is an exception).

In cases of doubt, the ZAV can also provide information in its new administrative office at Peter-Grünberg-Platz 1 in Lauterbach. You can reach him at the telephone number (06641) 967171 and the email address info@zav-online.de or on the homepage zav-online.de. “Only properly separated waste can be recycled and contributes to climate and resource protection,” explains Johanna Boß. Nationwide, 30 percent of false throws are complained about, which is a huge unused potential.

Leftover food, diapers or vacuum cleaner bags in the yellow bin can contaminate the packaging to such an extent that recycling is no longer an option, so the only option is to burn it. For example, plastic should not be stuffed into an empty can, as this would make sorting more difficult. It is also not helpful to throw the collected packaging waste in a plastic bag into the bin. Especially since there are people who dispose of diapers in bags with a camouflage layer of plastic packaging on top. Bags should be transparent to make it easier to identify incorrect litter (yellow bag instead of blue or black garbage bags). (By Werner Stoepler)

The The Fulda district also pointed out that there is a strict ban on disposing of potting soil in organic waste bins.
