Off to vacation, but where to?
Kerosene is becoming scarce, flights are becoming more expensive and the summer holidays are just around the corner. For many vacationers, this means that if you want to travel this year, you will have to dig deeper into your pockets than ever before. RTL.de and the experts from Urlaubstracker have found exciting places for those on a budget! Here you don't pay anything for highlights!
Hiking instead of expensive excursions
Even if booking a vacation doesn't seem like much financial fun at first glance, there is a clever way to save hundreds of euros on site. Many of Europe's most popular holiday islands offer a surprisingly large selection of free experiences – from dream beaches like the “Caribbean of the Mediterranean” in Sardinia to spectacular viewpoints like the Eira do Serrado on Madeira to hikes through impressive nature, for example in Corsica, Tenerife or in the S'Albufera Natural Park on Mallorca.
These zero-euro holiday islands save your summer holidays
Malta is at the top of the ranking. The island state offers the largest selection of free experiences compared to classics such as Mallorca, Corfu or Tenerife – from sights to beaches and natural highlights. The best 0 euro tips include the Dingli Cliffs with their spectacular sea views, the Xemxija trail on the trail of Roman history or the turquoise Anchor Bay with its small, rustic village.

Video tip: Kerosene crisis unsettles vacationers
Santorini doesn’t have to be expensive either. Although activities such as sailing trips can easily cost several hundred euros, there are many free alternatives: for example a day on the beach in Vlychada, whose rocky landscape is reminiscent of a lunar landscape, or a visit to the Akrotiri lighthouse with a view of the sea. The sunset in the coastal town of Oia is particularly popular – and completely free.
Surprising: Sylt is also one of the best low-budget destinations in Germany. The island can be easily reached without a flight and offers numerous free experiences – such as Ellenbogen Beach, the Braderuper Heide, which turns into a purple sea of flowers in late summer, or the Harhoog barrow, a relic from the Stone Age.

Beach holidays are particularly suitable without a budget
A day at the beach is one of the cheapest vacation activities ever. If you forgo sunbeds and parasols for a fee or bring your own beach shelter, you can save a lot here. An example is Sardinia: The island offers over 800 freely accessible beaches – including fantastic locations such as Cala Brandinchi, which is considered the “Caribbean of the Mediterranean”.
Rising flight prices are currently putting many holidaymakers under pressure – not least due to shortages of kerosene and high demand during the holiday season. For many, this means that the flight becomes the most expensive part of the trip.

But this is exactly where countermeasures can be taken. If you choose your travel destination consciously and rely on free activities there, you can significantly reduce the overall price without having to forego memorable experiences. The most popular holiday islands in particular offer a variety of highlights that don't cost a cent. We show some of them here:
