There were hardly any violations at the speed camera marathon in Vogelsberg. However, one driver was particularly fast. The police also flashed two ambulances

Lauterbach – The people of Vogelsberg mostly stick to the prescribed speeds. Maybe not all year round, but at least as part of the speed camera marathon on Wednesday (April 15th)because there was only one outlier that resulted in a driver's license being revoked.

Very early on, there was a flashlight in the Hochstrasse in Homberg through the police district. This is because the main traffic to the Ohmtalschule runs along this street. The speed limit is 30 kilometers per hour. Although the location was known for the speed camera system, between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. seven road users were caught traveling between 38 and 48 kilometers per hour too fast.

Heiko Korell, who was responsible for carrying out the speed checks, was able to name the license plates that were driving too fast when asked. Of course not completely, but he just revealed that three each came from the Vogelsberg district and the Gießen district and one of those caught came from the Marburg district.

Heiko Korell also noted that some vehicles certainly had the AOK education center as their destination and that this could explain the different license plates. Apparently the word had gotten around that there was “lightning” on the elevated road and no further violations were found. Speed measurements continued at this location until 10:30 a.m.

There were hardly any speeding violations at the numerous measuring points in Vogelsberg. It was driven too slowly rather than too fast. In the picture the device shows Tempo 42.

Afterwards, measurements were on the list until 2:30 p.m. on Karlstrasse in Homberg. The permitted speed here was also 30 kilometers per hour. The road users there weren't so lucky: 42 were traveling too fast, and the record result of 66 kilometers per hour won't be cheap.

In Homberg the second station was already in operation again when work began in Lauterbach to prepare everything for the inspection on Lindenstrasse. Because the laser gun was used there and there is no footage of an offense, the road users were waved out of the moving traffic after exceeding the speed limit.

Speedmarathon 2026: Hesse police take stock

According to the police, 352,004 vehicles were measured at over 230 measuring points in Hesse as part of the speed marathon on April 15th. More than 570 police officers and municipal employees were deployed. During the checks, the emergency services found 10,248 speeding violations despite the announced and previously published measuring points.

This corresponds to a complaint rate (ratio of vehicles that were driving too fast compared to all vehicles measured) of 2.9 percent. 103 drivers who were driving too fast will be banned from driving. In 39 cases, the inspectors initiated criminal proceedings. 44 blood samples were taken for evidence purposes.

Since such checks are personnel-intensive, the Lauterbach police officers were reinforced by riot police from Lich. Laser cutting took place in the Bleiche area in the direction of Vogelsbergschule. No speeding was detected during this visit. Nevertheless, one or two road users were directed to the Bleiche parking lot because other suspicions had arisen. In any case, the police presence had an effect, which was ultimately the main goal of the entire operation.

The first location at the speed camera marathon Wednesday for the joint regulatory authority district of the communities Freiensteinau, Grebenhain, Lautertal and Herbstein was Steinauer Straße in Freiensteinau. Most of the traffic goes towards Schlüchtern. The measurements started around eight o'clock.

Neuralgic point at the “Rixfelder Kreuz”

In addition to the head of the regulatory authority district, Alexander Mönnig, three other people were on duty. After four hours of speed measurements it was over. Of the 267 vehicles measured, there were three exceedances. The highest speed was twelve kilometers per hour and meant a fine of 50 euros for the driver.

In the standard measurements in Freiensteinau, the exceedance rate is actually around 10 percent. At the speed marathon on Wednesday it was around 3 percent. A critical point in terms of possible dangers is the “Rixfelder Kreuz” shortly before Herbstein, where the cycling traffic crossing and car traffic shortly behind make the B275 federal highway appear “worthy of lightning”.

A speed of 70 kilometers per hour is permitted here. The well-developed federal highway tempts many people not to stick to the prescribed speed, says Alexander Mönnig. That's why lightning flashed in both directions there on Wednesday.

Two ambulances are also flashed

“Oh, 80 – where is the driver?” comes another employee on site. Alexander Mönnig examines the recording. He knows what he has to do to better recognize the driver. He even knows him personally, but of course doesn't reveal who he is. Two ambulances that use special signals are also flashed.

However, both vehicles move within the permitted tolerance, as they are allowed to drive up to 100 kilometers per hour instead of 70 kilometers per hour. 1186 vehicles were measured there in four hours. Only three were too fast, one of which was eleven kilometers per hour more. (gs)
