The premature babies are tested for bacteria and germs at regular intervals in the neonatal ward at the Bremen-Mitte Clinic. This ward only cares for sick and tiny premature babies. Within a very short period of time, the hospital detected the Serratia pathogen at least twice. A bacterium that causes urinary tract and respiratory tract infections. This is a catastrophe for premature babies whose immune systems are particularly weak.

One of the affected premature babies was born in the 24th week of pregnancy and weighed just 500 grams when it became infected with the virus. It didn't survive the infection. “So, of course, our sympathy goes first and foremost to the parents of the premature baby who died. Otherwise, it is now our job to implement all the hygiene measures that are necessary. Of course, we continued to test,” explains Karen Matiszick from the Gesundheit Nord Klinikverbund Bremen.

Another child was colonized by a germ, but it is not yet clear whether it is also the Serratia pathogen. “We have of course isolated the children from the other patients. We have introduced additional protective clothing. We are in coordination with the health department and we have now introduced a lot of additional hygiene measures.”reports Karen Matiszick in an interview with RTL.
