It only weighed about 500 grams!
At the Bremen-Mitte Clinic, a pathogen is spreading in the intensive care unit for premature babies that is harmless, at least for older children. However, it causes life-threatening infections in premature babies and has claimed the life of a newborn.

At least one other case is known

The premature babies are tested for bacteria and germs at regular intervals in the neonatal ward at the Bremen-Mitte Clinic. This ward only cares for sick and tiny premature babies. Within a very short period of time, the hospital detected the Serratia pathogen at least twice. A bacterium that causes urinary tract and respiratory tract infections. This is a catastrophe for premature babies whose immune systems are particularly weak.

One of the affected premature babies was born in the 24th week of pregnancy and weighed just 500 grams when it became infected with the virus. It didn't survive the infection. “So, of course, our sympathy goes first and foremost to the parents of the premature baby who died. Otherwise, it is now our job to implement all the hygiene measures that are necessary. Of course, we continued to test,” explains Karen Matiszick from the Gesundheit Nord Klinikverbund Bremen.

At least one other premature baby is said to have also been infected with the pathogen, but is stable. Another child was colonized by a germ, but it is not yet clear whether it is also the Serratia pathogen. “We have of course isolated the children from the other patients. We have introduced additional protective clothing. We are in coordination with the health department and we have now introduced a lot of additional hygiene measures.”reports Karen Matiszick in an interview with RTL.

The case is not unusual

How exactly the pathogen got into the hospital can no longer be clarified. Pathogens can get into the hospital in many different ways. For example, by people from outside who carry the germs into the hospital on their clothing or skin. But germs can also enter the hospital through the air or water. The case from the clinic in Bremen should now be solved with the help of the health department.
