First, the vehicles should be weighed on a weighbridge in Schenklengsfeld. However, since this can only measure up to 50 tons and the estimated weight of the trucks exceeded this limit, they were weighed on a 100-ton scale in Heringen. The measurement confirmed the police's suspicions: Instead of the permissible total mass of 40,000 kilograms, the trucks weighed 56,050 kilograms and 51,050 kilograms, which corresponds to an overload of around 40 and 27 percent.
The drivers, aged 36 and 40, had loaded the logs in a forest in Etterwinden, Thuringia, and were on their way to a sawmill in Eiterfeld. By overloading both vehicles, the company could have mathematically saved one trip. A timber transport of this type has an empty weight of around 22,500 kilograms and can accommodate a maximum of 17,500 kilograms of payload.
After a partial unloading, the teams were allowed to continue their journey. The unloaded wood must now be transported using another suitable vehicle. Drivers must expect fines and one point each in Flensburg.
