Holidays are increasingly becoming a luxury item!
Since then The Iran war has not only increased fuel costs for drivers: Even though the price has recently fallen again, refueling remains much more expensive than before the war began at the end of February. And cruise lines, regardless of whether they fuel their ships with heavy oil, marine diesel or LNG, continue to be under price pressure. But what does this mean for customers? RTL.de asked the most popular cruisers!

Which shipping companies are now planning fuel cost surcharges?

Thousands of cruise passengers were also affected. The shipping companies initially canceled their trips in the Persian Gulf and the Orient, but the organizational consequences are now also affecting other travel areas. Many ships travel on alternative routes throughout the rest of the year. Shipping companies affected by changes include: AIDA and TUI Cruisesalso MSC Cruises canceled all Orient cruises.

But now things are getting even worse for ship fans and everything is becoming more expensive because there are supposed to be fuel surcharges? The shipping company A-Rosa Flussschiff was one of the first shipping companies to announce on its website that they are charging an energy cost surcharge on all new bookings for 2026, based on the terms and conditions. There is talk of nine euros per day per passenger.

Aida Cruises According to RTL information, sells its trips at fixed prices until 2028, which will not be increased subsequently. This is what the company headquarters in Rostock told RTL.de: “If there are significantly higher fuel and energy prices in the medium and long term, this will have an impact on price calculations in the future. However, energy costs are only part of the costs for cruises.”

MSC Cruises left an RTL.de request unanswered. The company currently does not comment on energy cost surcharges.

There is more openness TUI Cruises, i.e. “My Ship”. The shipping company from Hamburg can partially cushion higher fuel costs through forward transactions. The shipping company confirms to RTL.de: “A significant part of the demand for the current year has already been secured in advance.” But: “In principle, we continually review our pricing and cost development as part of our regular planning. We evaluate specific measures or adjustments depending on the situation and at the appropriate time.”

The also very popular shipping company, Costa Cruises, According to RTL information, it also has no plans to change its current pricing model. It says: “Cruises continue to offer exceptional value for money, with an advantage of 20 to 45 percent over comparable land-based holidays.”
