Two people injured on the A7 after an unsuccessful overtaking maneuver
A 70-year-old Ford driver was traveling in the right lane towards Kassel. While trying to overtake an Opel Movano in front of him, he apparently overlooked an approaching Audi in the left lane. According to the police, the 22-year-old Audi driver was unable to avoid the collision despite emergency braking.
The force of the impact caused both vehicles to spin out of control. The Audi first crashed into the concrete barrier and then into the guard rail opposite. The Ford spun 180 degrees after also hitting the concrete wall and eventually collided with the Opel driving next to it, which came to a stop on the shoulder.
60,000 euros in damage and three kilometers of traffic jams
First responders treated the 22-year-old Audi driver at the scene of the accident, and he was released a short time later. The 70-year-old man who caused the accident was taken to hospital for further evaluation. The driver of the Opel remained uninjured.
Both the Ford and the Audi were no longer drivable and had to be towed away. The police put the total damage caused at around 60,000 euros. Emergency services closed the left lane and the shoulder during the rescue work. This led to a traffic jam of around three kilometers long. Traffic was able to be diverted past the accident site in one lane.
There was also a tragic accident on the A66 the evening before: An Audi driver left the road, broke through a protective barrier and landed in a forest. The rescue workers found the car “six meters below the highway.”
