Luxury in a glass!
A long breakfast, plus a few liquid vitamins – delicious! Unfortunately, it's also quite expensive: in recent years, the prices for orange juice have risen dramatically. But why actually?
Juicy! Price increases for own brands are greatest
Stiftung Warentest last tested the quality of orange juice in October 2023. 20 of the 27 products tested at the time are still available today, although some have changed names. What has changed for everyone is the price.
The increase is particularly sharp for the cheaper own brands. Four of these juices from discounters or supermarkets cost 54 percent more today (as of February 2026) than they did two and a half years ago. That's 70 cents more per liter – it used to be 1.29 euros per liter, now it is 1.99 euros:
-
Rio D'Oro orange juice from Aldi Nord
-
Good & cheap orange from Edeka
-
Fruchtstern orange juice from Netto Marken-Discount
-
Yes! Orange juice from Rewe
Nevertheless, the orange juice from this provider is still the cheapest in the product test comparison.

Why is orange juice so expensive now?
As with many products, this is primarily due to the increased raw material prices, according to the Association of the German Fruit Juice Industry. Oranges have simply become significantly more expensive. In the case of OJ, the main reason for this is the poor harvests in Brazil, the main growing country for the oranges used. In recent years, including the 2024/2025 season, various reasons have ruined the yield: such as extreme weather conditions caused by climate change and the plant disease citrus greening, in which a bacterium destroys orange trees.
After all: the current harvest of 2025/2026 is considered good. Some retailers are therefore already reacting and lowering the prices for orange juice slightly.
