Tegut is closely connected to Fulda. After Migros' withdrawal, the district administrator and mayor are hoping for a solution that will secure jobs and markets.
Fulda – The announced separation of the Swiss Migros Group from its food subsidiary Tegut causes concern in the city and district of Fulda, but at the same time also gives hope for a strong new owner. In a joint statement, Fulda's District Administrator Bernd Woide and Mayor Dr. Heiko Wingenfeld (both CDU) now commented on the latest developments.
The news is “bitter” with regard to the tradition of the Tegut grocer, “which began with the founder Theo Gutberlet in Fulda in 1948 and was a success story with national appeal for decades,” as Woide and Wingenfeld say. Their solidarity goes out to “all Tegut employees who identify strongly with the company”. They are counting on “that a good and sustainable solution will be found for them with a new owner”.
Tegut before sale: The city and district of Fulda hope for an opportunity from Edeka
As can be seen from the statement, the city and district are now turning their attention to the planned takeover by Edeka. “We are confident that – subject to antitrust review – the takeover by a strong retailer like Edeka offers the opportunity to maintain locations and jobs and to expand again in the future,” explain the district administrator and mayor. According to the two top municipal representatives, the city of Fulda and the region have had “good experiences” with Edeka so far.
The main priority for the local level is to ensure local supplies. It is “in the vital interest of the city and district that the branch network of food markets, which fulfills an important supply function for the population, especially in rural areas, is maintained and that vacancies are avoided,” the joint statement continues.
At the same time, Woide and Wingenfeld are promoting the Fulda location. The city and the region offer “the best framework conditions for a strong and reliable partner in the food industry”.
