Children put wood on the tracks near Bad Salzschlirf. A train driver therefore had to initiate emergency braking. The federal police are looking for witnesses.
Bad Salzschlirf – Three children, estimated to be between eight and twelve years old, placed a board and several branches on the railway line between Bad Salzschlirf and Fulda on Sunday (March 8th) around 5:15 p.m., according to the Federal Police Inspectorate in Kassel. A witness observed the incident and alerted the police. He reported that the children ran away after the objects ran over them.
According to the Federal Police, the driver of the RE 45 regional express on the journey from Limburg to Fulda recognized both the obstacles in the track and the children. He blew a warning whistle and initiated rapid braking. However, it was not possible to prevent the objects from being driven over. The train was able to continue its journey; no one was injured.

Due to the emergency braking, there was a delay of nine minutes. A patrol from the Fulda Federal Police Station then visited the area around Bad Salzschlirf, but was unable to find any more people. The Federal Police Inspectorate in Kassel has started the investigation and initiated criminal proceedings. Witnesses who can provide information about the children or the incident are asked to call (0561) 816160.
In connection with the incident, the Federal Police urgently warn against entering tracks and other railway facilities: Railway tracks may only be crossed in the designated places and when the barriers are open. There is a danger to life on railway systems because the speed and the resulting air suction of the trains are often underestimated.
Trains approach almost silently; electrically powered trains in particular are only noticeable to the human ear late. In addition, trains cannot swerve and have a very long braking distance due to their weight – which means that timely braking is often no longer possible. It was only at the end of February that a man was caught on the railway line between Großenlüder and Bimbach. The 47-year-old was injured.
