The veterinary office of the Main-Kinzig district has lifted the additional protective measures due to bird flu. After infected animals were found at the beginning of February, there was no further evidence.
Main-Kinzig District – After three weeks without any new evidence of bird flu at Lake Großkrotzenburger See, the Main-Kinzig District Office for Veterinary Affairs and Consumer Protection has lifted the additional animal health measures, the Main-Kinzig District announced. The background for the measures was: Four dead wild birds were found at Lake Großkrotzenburger in early February. These had been diagnosed with avian influenza, commonly called bird flu.
The additional measures affected, among other things, individual businesses in the immediate vicinity of the site that had to stable their animals. Since there have been no further positive cases in the area in question in the past three weeks, from a technical point of view, the district says, “it can no longer be assumed that avian influenza will continue to exist in the wild bird population in the immediate vicinity of the lake”. Nevertheless, the Main-Kinzig district continues to ask for increased vigilance.
Bird flu in the Main-Kinzig district: additional measures lifted
The increased biosecurity measures continue to apply to animal owners throughout the district, as the district administration announced. In principle, the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI virus) is still active in wild bird populations. Corresponding finds in the region repeatedly bear witness to this.
According to the Friedrich Loeffler Institute, “the risk of HPAI entering wild waterbird populations and German poultry farms as well as bird populations in zoological facilities is assessed as high.”
Against this background, the Main-Kinzig district is maintaining the general order that has been in effect in the district since October of last year. This means that all poultry farms in the area of responsibility are obliged to meet a higher biosecurity standard.
