“My daughter forgives me. We are in contact”

On December 9, 2001, Michele suddenly disappeared without a trace while she was doing Christmas shopping. Several authorities and even the FBI searched intensively for the then 38-year-old mother of three children. It was only found again last Friday (February 20th) – after 24 years! According to the New York Post, she lived all this time in a rural community, a three-hour drive from her original home. There, in the poorest district near the South Carolina border, she led a new, secret life. Michele still lives there today.

Michele Lyn Hundley Smith has an explanation for her sudden disappearance: She told police she left because of “family issues.”. She is now at least partially working on it. “My daughter forgives me. We are in touch,” she told the New York Post.
