Music icon of the 90s
It was probably only a matter of time that Shania Twain (60) would one day get her own biopic. Now it is clear who will tell the story of the country-pop icon: As the industry publication Deadline reports, Sony Pictures has entrusted filmmaker Leah McKendrick to direct and screenplay the project. The film will simply be called “Shania” – the studio has not yet revealed any more about the content.

McKendrick is no stranger to the world of musical film. Her past as a pop singer and songwriter is said to have opened the door to this project. The director most recently directed the romantic comedy “Voicemails for Isabelle” with Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson for Netflix, which will be released on June 19th.

From the charts to the screen
Shania Twain is not only the subject of the film, but also actively involved as a producer. Why the musician's life is suitable as biopic material becomes clear when you look at her CV. The five-time Grammy Award winner has helped redefine country music for global audiences since the 1980s, paving the way for the genre mix of country and pop that dominates the charts today. Songs like “That Don't Impress Me Much” and “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!” have long since become engraved in the collective musical memory.
More than 100 million albums sold worldwide make Twain the best-selling artist in country-pop history. She was the first artist ever to release three consecutive albums, each of which achieved Diamond certification – a record that still stands today.

The project joins the studio's growing music biopic offensive. Sony released “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody” in cinemas via TriStar in December 2022 and is also leading Sam Mendes' ambitious project “The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event”.
While the biopic project gets underway, Twain himself does not remain idle. Her seventh studio album, “Little Miss Twain,” is scheduled for release on July 24th.
