Criminals in southeast Hesse steal jewelry with hugs and false warmth. Older people are particularly affected.

Main-Kinzig district – Cases of jewelry theft are currently increasing in the area of the police headquarters in Southeast Hesse. The scam is as simple as it is effective: the thieves appear friendly, helpful or extremely warm, as the police say. In fact, they act with considerable criminal energy. They gain the trust of their victims and consciously seek physical proximity in order to steal high-quality jewelry in an unobserved moment. Gold chains in particular are the focus of criminals.

False friendliness as a cover for jewelry theft

In several cases, the unknown perpetrators approached their victims in parking lots or in public spaces. They feigned helpfulness or sought contact under a pretext. In some cases, people were involved in conversations and suddenly huggedwhile gold chains or other jewelry were stolen unnoticed. In other cases, the perpetrators placed alleged costume jewelry around their victims' necks or conspicuously forced their way into their personal space in order to remove high-quality jewelry without being noticed.

The police advise keeping your distance from strangers and not allowing them into your immediate vicinity unnecessarily. Hugs or jewelry from strangers should not be allowed. Distrust is appropriate when it comes to unsolicited offers of help or supposed gifts. Anyone who is being harassed should shout loudly for help or speak specifically to passers-by. In acute cases: dial the emergency number 110. In the event of damage, you should definitely file a criminal complaint.

Officials are particularly asking older people and their relatives to speak out about these criminal scams and to remain vigilant. Anyone who makes suspicious observations or can provide information about suspects is asked to contact the police.
