Kuno M. is convicted 43 years after the crime.

After four decades, new investigative methods convict Kuno M.
There is no statute of limitations for murder. And that is exactly what was shown again in Hamburg on Thursday (May 28, 2026). It has been 43 years since a man was murdered and robbed in Hammerbrook. It's been a year since a man was arrested and it's been a few hours since a verdict was finally made.

Defendant wants to be left alone

“They were the perpetrator, they were the murderer.” With these words, the presiding judge underlined the verdict against Kuno M. on Thursday (May 28th) before the Hamburg regional court. The court is convinced: Kuno M. murdered the transsexual prostitute Peter B., who called himself Angelique, more than 40 years ago.

The defense pleaded for acquittal at the start of the trial on Thursday. It is a purely circumstantial process. But the Hamburg regional court is certain: Kuno M. is the murderer: “It took into account the DNA traces from a cigarette butt in the car ashtray. It also took into account the fact that the defendant had the revolver and suitable ammunition. The jacket that the defendant is said to have worn was also a central issue. And the act should not have been extraneous. Here the chamber emphasized that there were no reasonable doubts about the defendant’s perpetratorship,” said Maximilian Engel, court spokesman. Kuno M. is “an old man who would like to be left alone,” argues the defense. But the judge is certain: “There can’t be that many coincidences.” The chamber also emphasizes that “there were no reasonable doubts about the defendant’s perpetration, precisely based on the overall view of the evidence.” 43 years after the crime, Kuno M. was sentenced to six years and three months in prison under juvenile criminal law because at the time of the crime he was still a teenager, just 18 years old.

Judgment under juvenile criminal law at the age of 62

It is the night of January 11, 1983. According to the court's conviction, Kuno M. gets into the transsexual prostitute's Mercedes not far from the Reeperbahn and drives with him to his caravan in the Hammerbrook district. According to the presiding judge, Kuno M. shoots his victim with a revolver: three shots, three hits. He then steals 100 DM from the dead man's possessions and disappears.

The police found DNA traces at the crime scene, but in 1983 the appropriate technology did not yet exist to evaluate them. Kuno M. will not be held accountable for this murder for decades. But there is no statute of limitations on murder and the police have now set up cold case units across Germany to reopen unsolved crimes. Also in Hamburg.

The court sees the murder criteria of insidiousness, greed and the intention to enable the crime as being fulfilled in the case of Kuno M., who has been deaf since birth. During the announcement of the verdict, Kuno M. repeatedly shakes his head in disbelief and swallows hard. Kuno M. interrupts the judge's reasons for the verdict with the statement “that is a wrong verdict,” translated by his sign language interpreter. He won't accept that. He now has a week to appeal the verdict.
