A few days ago, jungle favorite Hubert Fella (58) frightened his fans with an Instagram post from the hospital. At first there is suspicion of a stroke or heart attack, but then it turns out: Hubert is suffering from cerebral vein thrombosis and needs immediate surgery.

They were dramatic days for Hubert Fella. Before he was admitted to the hospital, he “just rode the carousel.” Severe dizziness meant he could no longer walk straight. Eventually he vomited profusely at night and his family doctor sent him to the hospital. There it was discovered that the ex-jungle camper had cerebral vein thrombosis.

But what is that actually? Professor Christoph Kleinschnitz, Director of the Neurology Clinic at Essen University Hospital, explains: “Cerebral vein thrombosis occurs when the veins block the venous conductors in the brain.” Blood has to be removed from the organs and veins are responsible for this. Leg vein thrombosis is better known, but it can also occur in the brain.

How do you recognize a thrombosis in the head?
“A common warning sign is a severe headache that lasts for days, sometimes weeks, for which there is no other normal explanation.” This often results in visual disturbances and epileptic seizures. Symptoms similar to a stroke could also indicate this, because the blood from the brain cannot drain properly. “It builds up and eventually flows out of the veins. You have a bleed in the brain.”
