Good news for Hünfeld: the Rewe in the city center is becoming a Nahkauf; a new operator takes over – the location remains intact, the jobs are secured.
Hünfeld – The shocking news spread like wildfire in the Haunestadt in January: The Rewe market on Lindenstrasse was supposed to close its doors on June 1st. At the beginning of the week, redemptive white smoke rose – on June 1st it was said: Rewe will become Nahkauf.
Nahkauf is a subsidiary of Rewe and acts as a classic local supplier. The supermarkets can be found primarily in smaller communities, rural areas and urban residential areas. The main goal is to ensure that the population can access food and everyday goods within walking distance. The markets are predominantly run by independent merchants.
Rewe-Aus averted: Hünfelder Markt is being converted into local shopping
The change is also associated with a change in management: Patrick Linn (31) from Eichenzell takes over; he already owns a Rewe branch in Künzell. According to the businessman, the transition should be seamless: “Since we can carry out most of the renovation work during ongoing operations, the Hünfelders don’t have to worry about closure.”
Since the previous owner left, the supermarket has been controlled from the Rewe headquarters as a so-called direct store. “But this is always only a temporary measure until a new merchant can be found for a retail space. Since I already run the market in Künzell, the management came to me and we started talking straight away,” Linn looks back.
After much consideration, the self-employed businessman saw the only solution was to convert it into a Nahkauf branch. “Due to the age, size and location of the market, this makes much more sense. Above all, as a local shop, we are closer to the customers, can come into contact with them and respond to their wishes,” the 31-year-old explains his reasons. The range should remain as it is in the transition phase. “At a later point in time, we will adapt the range according to customer wishes if necessary,” says Linn.
Happ bakery counter disappears from Nahkauf in Hünfeld
Mayor Benjamin Tschesnok (CDU) welcomes the conversion of the Rewe store into a local store as “very good news for Hünfeld and the local people”. It is good that the citizens of the current location continue to have a wide range of options for their daily needs. “This further strengthens the quality of life on site. It is also pleasing that the jobs will be retained and the current team will remain on board,” adds the town hall boss and wishes the entire team much success at the start. The current team consists of employees around market manager Constanze Höllig.
But it won't work without changes, as the Happ bakery can no longer guarantee the operation of the bakery counter due to its surrounding specialist shops, reports Linn. “As in other markets, we will continue to sell the Happ Bakery's products via a baking station. This means customers will retain the quality they are used to,” he gives the all-clear. The post office in Rewe will close briefly while the relevant contracts are changed.
