It keeps spreading!
The hantavirus broke out on a cruise ship. Three people are already dead. Several others who had contact with the sick people have become infected. All current developments in our live ticker.
Three people die from Hanta infection
The cruise ship “Hondius” had been anchored off Cape Verde off the west coast of Africa with around 150 people on board since Sunday after the virus was previously detected on board. A total of three people have died as a result so far. The dead are an elderly Dutch couple and a German woman.
According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), a large proportion of hantavirus infections in Germany are asymptomatic or have non-specific symptoms. The viruses can also cause fever and kidney damage accompanied by bleeding. But there is also a group of hantaviruses whose infection can lead to nausea, vomiting, coughing and lung disease. This includes the South American Andes virus. (with AFP, dpa)
