The anticipation is huge, but then shortly before departure comes the shock!
An expired passport, a typo in the ticket or missing documents for children – such mistakes can ruin your dream vacation. Why May is crucial and what vacationers should check now.

Passport suddenly invalid – what you can do in an emergency

Typically in May, holidaymakers' inquiries to citizens' offices and airline hotlines increase. The pipes are running hot because vacationers suddenly notice that something crucial is missing or faulty. A classic: the passport.

Unfortunately, many people take a closer look at it much too late, namely when they are packing, and realize that it has expired! Or the remaining term is not enough. It becomes particularly critical when traveling long distances, because… Many countries require three to six months of validity from entry. Just extend it? It does not work. A new passport is needed – and that takes time. According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, at least two weeks, but often significantly longer. Four to six weeks can pass, especially in the main season. So it's better if you take a look at your passports now.

And if things get tight, there are still these emergency solutions:

  • Express Passport: More expensive than the normal one, but also faster – often in three working days.

  • Temporary passport: It's usually available straight away, but it's not accepted everywhere. For example, you can't get into the USA with it.

That's how bad a wrong name or typo on the flight ticket is

A small typo can have big consequences. “Müller” instead of “Mueller” or a swapped first name – and the ticket no longer fits the passport. And the rules are tough: If the data doesn't match, the airline can simply abandon you.

Here too, it is better to take another thorough look at the travel documents and report any errors to the tour operator or airline quickly. Whether a name change is possible and how expensive it will cost you depends on the respective airline or organizer.

Children without ID? These rules apply when traveling with and without parents

No new children's passports will be issued since 2024. Since then, you will need either an ID card or a real passport for every child – even for babies! And here too, the production takes weeks and anyone who notices too late that their offspring is missing a document will quickly come under pressure. What's particularly tricky is that if a child's appearance has changed significantly, what was supposed to be a valid document can suddenly become invalid.

If a child is traveling abroad without both parents, there is something else to consider besides the passport, otherwise things can become critical at the border: a written declaration of consent from the parent or guardian is often mandatory – especially if they have different surnames. In some countries, this power of attorney must even be certified.

You should also check these things before your trip

In addition to the classics mentioned, there are other pitfalls that travelers are constantly confronted with:

  • Overlook residual validity: Many countries require that your passport is valid for at least six months. HERE you can read which travel destinations are included.

  • Forgotten entry permit: For Great Britain you now need an ETA, for the USA you still need an ESTA. Without it there's no getting in. It's best to check now whether you need an entry permit for your holiday destination.

  • Insurance missing: Although not a must, having international health insurance can save a lot of money in an emergency. It is therefore worth thinking about this in advance.

  • Missed travel vaccinations: For some countries it is recommended to have certain vaccinations administered in advance. Otherwise, you may end up with dangerous holiday souvenirs in your luggage. Vaccinations should also be obtained early so that they actually take effect during your vacation. You can find an overview of the most important travel vaccinations HERE.

Reading tip: Passport, visa, etc.: Does the tour operator have to inform me about the necessary documents?

Checklist: How to save your summer vacation!

All of the cases mentioned can be easily prevented by sticking to this one golden rule: check early! Experts recommend checking all documents at least three months before departure. That means specifically:

If you do this in May, you can start the summer relaxed – instead of worrying about your vacation at the airport. (with spot on)
