Schlitz – A 31-year-old police officer was hit and injured by an out-of-control Mercedes on the A7 near Schlitz on Tuesday evening (May 5th), the police said. The officer was on duty at the time of the accident to secure another accident site in the area of the hard shoulder there.
At around 8:40 p.m., a 53-year-old from the Miltenberg district was driving his Mercedes E-Class in the left lane towards Fulda coming from Niederaula. When the road was significantly wet and there was aquaplaning in places, he lost control of his vehicle when braking about 1.5 kilometers before the Hünfeld/Schlitz junction. The car spun across the entire road to the right and broke through the guard rail.
Policewoman is hit by car on A7 and injured
At this time, there was a radio patrol car from the Petersberg police motorway station on the hard shoulder with its blue lights and hazard lights on. The two officers secured another accident scene there. The 31-year-old policewoman was in front of the patrol car and was about to climb over the guardrail towards the embankment when the Mercedes collided with the guardrail directly behind the rear of the police vehicle. It broke through the guardrail and came to a stop on the adjacent embankment, sloping down to the road, badly damaged. The officer was hit and also thrown into the embankment.
Fortunately, the police officer did not suffer any life-threatening injuries. After first aid from the emergency services, she was taken to a local hospital. The 53-year-old Mercedes driver was able to free himself from his vehicle and was uninjured.
Another patrol car from the Petersberg police motorway station was positioned about 600 meters away to warn road users of the danger zone with lights – the section is considered an accident hotspot when it is wet. These officers were able to provide first aid immediately after the accident and secure the scene.
In addition to reinforcements from the Bad Hersfeld and Fulda police stations, two ambulances, two fire engines and the Christoph 28 rescue helicopter with an emergency doctor were sent to the scene of the accident. The Fulda motorway maintenance department was also called in to secure and provide advance warning at the accident site.
In order for the helicopter to land, the southbound lane of the A7 in the direction of Fulda/Hünfeld had to be temporarily completely closed. The complex recovery of the Mercedes also required another full closure, with traffic being able to partially flow out of the left lane. The police estimate the material damage caused to be at least 60,000 euros.
There was also an accident with a Porsche recently on the A66 near Hanau. The police found the car in a field and there was no trace of the driver.
