Around two weeks ago, Jonathan Klinsmann was seriously injured during a soccer game. Now his father Jürgen Klinsmann describes how he experienced the situation from a great distance and how his son is doing today.
“Recovery will take time, that’s for sure”
Jürgen Klinsmann (61) spoke in more detail about the serious problem for the first time He expressed his injury to his son Jonathan Klinsmann (29) and gave a health update. The goalkeeper broke a cervical vertebra during a game between his club Cesena FC and US Palermo on April 18th. The reason was a collision with an opposing player.
“I think everyone can imagine what it means when you hear such news as a parent and then see the pictures of your son being carried off the pitch.”said Jürgen Klinsmann in an interview with the “Hamburger Abendblatt” about the shock. “And all of this from a distance of more than 10,500 kilometers!” The former international was in the USA at the time and his son was at the away game in Palermo, Italy. “Of course, in a situation like this you want to go to your child straight away,” explained Klinsmann.
Regarding his son's current condition, he explained: “Now we know more: recovery will take time, that's for sure. But fortunately he is in the very best hands. Jonathan is being looked after by excellent doctors.”

“Unfortunately my season ended on Saturday”
Jonathan Klinsmann was carried off the field after the collision and taken to a local hospital. Two days later he spoke up on Instagram. “Unfortunately my season ended on Saturday,” he wrote. His injury will “put him out of action for a while.” The goalkeeper thanked the fans of both teams for their well-wishes and his family and friends for their support. “Good luck to the boys in our fight for the playoffs and see you all again very soon,” his message ended.
The injury is a bitter setback for the son of Jürgen Klinsmann and the former model Debbie Chin (56). He has been under contract with Cesena since 2024 and established himself as the starting goalkeeper for the first time this season.
