The baby has been in the hospital his whole life!
In January 2026, a child with severe disabilities will be born in Feldkirch Hospital – which is why the parents make an extreme decision: They will not take him home. Now, after four months, the search for foster parents is underway. And there is already some good news.
“The parents were so shocked…”
State Councilor Martina Rüscher confirms the incident and makes it clear on her Instagram page: There are already several interested families who want to take in the baby. The Kronen-Zeitung reports two possible options for the child, but the Instagram post only says “several”.
Rüscher previously sent this call to the Internet: “We are urgently looking for foster parents for a small baby who was born in Feldkirch in January (editor's note) with a severe disability (head deformity, fingers fused together). The parents were so shocked that they didn't even take the child home.”

The call is being widely shared on social media such as Instagram and Facebook. This is actually not in the state councilor's interest at all, as she now admits. But ultimately, after four months in the hospital, the baby could finally find a permanent home. Otherwise it would have had to go to another facility.

Baby still needs several surgeries
But how can parents leave their baby in the hospital? From a purely legal perspective, secret abandonment without handover would be a criminal offense in Austria (Section 82 of the Criminal Code). But an anonymous birth is possible, in which the mother's identity remains secret and the newborn is given up for adoption after birth. There are also baby hatches.

Feldkirch's baby definitely needs several more operations and will have to go back to the hospital soon. The financing for this is secured. Until then, it should be happy in its new home!
