WhatsApp is now also using a subscription model!
Because with “WhatsApp Plus” users will soon have the opportunity to use additional functions – for a small monthly fee. But what is behind this paid subscription? What features will it offer users? And above all: Can you still use WhatsApp for free? We'll tell you the answers.

The end of the free version? What’s behind the “WhatsApp Plus” subscription

The so-called “WhatsApp Plus” is the first subscription model that Meta’s messenger service is introducing. This is intended to offer its users an expanded range of functions, as reported by the WABetaInfo portal, which specializes in WhatsApp.

However, the free WhatsApp version is not intended to replace the new subscription. It remains an optional booking. This means: WhatsApp remains with all of its basic functions – from messages to voice calls to status updates – without you having to pay anything for them.

What functions does “WhatsApp Plus” offer?

WhatsApp's new subscription model focuses primarily on new personalization functions. Users who opt for the paid version should have the opportunity to design their WhatsApp user interface as individually and freely as possible.

Anyone who subscribes to “WhatsApp Plus” will receive the following new features:

  • exclusive stickers – some with visual effects that extend across the entire screen,

  • 18 new colors for WhatsApp design,

  • 14 new WhatsApp icons for the home screen,

  • 20 pinnable chats so that the most important groups and people appear as high as possible, as well

  • ten exclusive ringtones to choose from.

Finally, “WhatsApp Plus” should make it possible to transfer certain settings – such as the chat design – to multiple chats. This means the desired personalization can be done even more easily and quickly.

But that wasn't all: WhatsApp is currently planning additional functions that will also be tested as part of the “Plus” subscription. At the moment, the subscription model seems to be primarily interesting for people who value a high level of individualization in their apps.

How much does the new “WhatsApp Plus” subscription cost?

The new “WhatsApp Plus” subscription will only require a small monthly fee. For European users, the current price is 2.49 euros per month. WABetaInfo warns, however, that a price adjustment is possible before a wider introduction.

Otherwise, “WhatsApp Plus” will work like a classic subscription. Once completed, it will automatically renew every month.

Who can subscribe to “WhatsApp Plus”?

Currently, “WhatsApp Plus” is only available as a beta version for Android 2.26.15.1. However, the subscription will also be available to other users in the coming weeks. However, the focus is initially on Android.

To find out whether you are already among the lucky ones, we recommend taking a look at the app settings. The subscription option should appear there as soon as it is available.
