What does Germany like to eat most?
The quick bite in between is becoming more expensive – but Germany's hunger for fast food remains unbroken. For a long time, currywurst was the number one favorite food among Germans. But now new data shows that the snack classic has been overtaken.
Fast food hit in Germany: Why the kebab is becoming increasingly popular – and leaving the currywurst behind
According to YouGov, around a third of people in this country treat themselves to fast food at least once a month – despite inflation and increased restaurant prices. One dish in particular has risen to the top: the meat kebab. Between 2021 and 2025, according to YouGov Profiles, the average price for a kebab rose from 4.85 euros to 7.11 euros – an increase of a whopping 47 percent. Instead of jumping ship, Germans are increasingly reaching for filled flatbread pockets.

Currywurst, long considered an unofficial national dish, is clearly losing ground in a direct duel. In the YouGov survey, 45 percent of adults said they prefer the kebab – only 37 percent said the currywurst. Younger people in particular and many women have turned away from the classic with sauce and towards kebab: according to the evaluation, 57 percent of 18 to 24 year olds would prefer to eat kebab, while among women it is clearly ahead of sausage at 47 to 30 percent.
The results of this survey are not representative.
The trend fits in with a general shift on the plate: pizza, pasta, burgers and kebabs have long since become everyday cuisine for many younger Germans, while classic German meat cuisine tends to dominate among those over 55. This is good news for the country's kebab stalls – they continue to fill their skewers, even though they have to pass on the increased meat, energy and rental costs to their customers. And that seems to say: It's better to have one more kebab a month – even if it costs as much today as a full lunch used to. (ros)
