Good news for commuters: The closure of the railway line between Fulda and Hanau will be lifted as planned after the weekend.
Fulda/Hanau – The rail connection between Hanau and Fulda is about to reopen. As Deutsche Bahn announces, regional and long-distance trains should run again as scheduled from Monday, April 13th. This means a bit of normality is returning to a central route for travelers from the Fulda region.
The reason for the closure during the Easter holidays was extensive construction work for the four-track expansion on the Hanau-Gelnhausen railway line. Work was carried out in several places, including platforms and tracks. The area was closed from March 27th. Replacement buses and diversions resulted in longer travel times. The replacement service between Gründau-Lieblos and Gelnhausen will remain in place until April 13th.

The Lahn-Kinzig Railway (RB 46) also resumes operations between Lieblos and Gelnhausen. The approximately five kilometer long section in the Gelnhausen area was completely renovated. In addition, the Lieblos train station has been expanded into a crossing station, the railway said. A new barrier-free platform was built in Gelnhausen.
However, the relief is only short-lived. The next restrictions in Hesse will come in May. As Deutsche Bahn also announced, the tracks between Nidda and Glauburg-Stockheim are to be renewed from May 9th to 23rd. This requires another closure to Gelnhausen – including replacement traffic for the affected passengers.
Meanwhile, train travelers between Hanau and Fulda will have to prepare for months of restrictions from mid-2027. Deutsche Bahn wants to completely close the section between Gelnhausen and Fulda during this period as part of its general renovation. Commuters will then have to deal with a lot.
