Do not drink and return unopened.
Consumers trust that “alcohol-free” really means alcohol-free. A Bavarian brewery must now recall a batch of its non-alcoholic Hefeweizen because secondary fermentation could contain alcohol.

Gutmann Hefeweizen in a 0.5 liter bottle

An alcohol-free Hefeweizen from the Gutmann brewery based in Titting (Eichstätt district) is being recalled because it may contain alcohol. According to the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety, secondary fermentation can occur in individual bottles. The affected beer is being recalled due to possible health and injury risks.

Both the dark and the light Gutmann Hefeweizen in the 0.5 liter bottle with a best-before date up to and including September 25th are affected. According to the Federal Office, secondary fermentation with yeast can exceed the permitted alcohol content for non-alcoholic beers.

Increased pressure can cause the bottles to burst

In addition, increased pressure can build up in the bottles, which in the worst case scenario can cause the glass bottles to burst. The brewery has now removed the affected product from sale as a precautionary measure.
