The people of Hanau have decided: Maximilian Bieri (SPD) will be the new mayor of the Brothers Grimm City. With 59.4 percent of the vote, he defeated Isabelle Hemsley (CDU).

Hanau – All results were counted within less than an hour. It quickly became apparent that Maximilian Bieri would prevail. Ultimately, 59.4 percent of Hanau residents voted for the 35-year-old, which was 14,561 of the votes cast on Sunday (March 29). Opposing candidate Isabelle Hemsley (CDU) received 9,951 votes (40.6 percent). The voter turnout was 36.35 percent.

Mayor and SPD candidate Maximilian Bieri entered the race as the favorite. He was received 48.1 percent of the vote in the first round of voting two weeks ago and narrowly missed victory. But CDU city councilor Isabelle Hemsley, who got 35.7 percent, also thought she had a chance of emerging victorious from the duel.

The election campaign between the two mid-thirties was fair and respectful; after all, they know each other well and have been working together for several years. Both grew up in Hanau and have been sitting together on the magistrate of the city of Hanau, which has been independent for a few months since 2023.

Bieri has a doctorate in mathematics and, as mayor, was previously responsible for the areas of education, social affairs, democracy and diversity as well as the city's real estate management. During the election campaign, he primarily campaigned for more affordable housing, equal educational opportunities and a solid budget policy.

He will now take over the office of mayor from Claus Kaminsky (SPD) on October 1st. The 66-year-old is the longest-serving mayor in Hesse and had announced last summer that he would resign from office early. He was at the helm of the city for more than two decades.
