With the start of the Easter holidays, traffic increases significantly. There is a risk of traffic jams on the important highways in and around East Hesse, especially around Easter.
Fulda – The Easter holidays are just around the corner – and with them the first big wave of travel of the year. As the federal Autobahn GmbH reports, drivers from East Hesse will have to prepare for significantly more traffic and possible traffic jams in the coming weeks.
There was already a first, smaller wave of travel with the start of the holidays in Bremen and Lower Saxony on March 20th and 21st. However, it gets really busy around the start of the holidays in Hesse: When the schools close on March 30th, significantly more traffic can be expected on the motorways. The volume of traffic is likely to increase noticeably, especially on Friday, March 27th and Saturday, March 28th.
Traffic jam alarm at Easter: there is a risk of full highways during the holidays
According to Autobahn GmbH, it will be even denser during Holy Week. Experience has shown that Maundy Thursday (April 2nd) is one of the days with the most traffic jams, as there are many commuters as well as holidaymakers. Drivers should avoid peak times in metropolitan areas if possible. While traffic on Good Friday and Easter Sunday remains comparatively moderate, it can become significantly busier again on Holy Saturday and Easter Monday.
A stronger wave of return travel can be expected the following weekend. There is a risk of further delays on important routes, especially on Sunday, April 12th. A week later, the situation is likely to be more relaxed – only on Sunday, April 19th, a slightly increased traffic volume can be expected.

The major long-distance routes are particularly relevant for travelers from the region. According to the announcement, the A3, A5 and A7 motorways, which also run through Hesse and in the immediate vicinity of East Hesse, are particularly affected. They are among the most important north-south connections and are regularly considered to be prone to traffic jams.
There is an additional restriction on the A81: In the southbound direction, the area at the Engelberg tunnel near Stuttgart remains closed until further notice due to fire damage.
The construction site sections in northern and eastern Hesse that are most at risk of congestion
For better orientation, Autobahn GmbH provides a traffic jam risk map for the period from March 16th to April 19th. It shows sections of construction sites on the most important holiday routes that are particularly at risk of traffic jams. According to the report, these are the construction site sections in northern and eastern Hesse that are most prone to traffic jams for this period:
- A4: Kirchheim Triangle – Bad Hersfeld
- A7: Melsungen – Homberg (Efze)
- A7: Hattenbach triangle – Hünfeld/Schlitz
- A7: Fulda Triangle – Bad Brückenau/Wildflecken
There was also a traffic jam on the A7 near Hünfeld/Schlitz on Thursday after an accident. A truck crashed into a safety trailer in the direction of Würzburg in the morning.

In order to get to your destination safely and as relaxed as possible, Autobahn GmbH recommends finding out about construction sites and closures on the planned route in advance, starting well rested and taking enough drinks and food with you. In addition, longer breaks should be planned and – if possible – driver changes organized.
When detouring, Autobahn GmbH recommends that you follow the dynamic signposting instructions on the gantries. It also reminds you that in the event of traffic jams or slowdowns, an emergency lane must be created to enable police, fire and rescue services to quickly pass through.
Autobahn GmbH says it provides comprehensive digital information for travel planning. These include an interactive construction site map on which all construction sites along the route can be viewed, current traffic situation reports from the highway traffic centers with real-time information about traffic jams and construction sites, and a free highway app for iOS and Android with information on route planning, the current traffic situation and available rest areas along the highways.
