A big bang in local handball: Hünfelder SV is withdrawing its men's team from the upper league and will start in the district upper league in the future. It's the end of an era.
Hünfeld – A few weeks ago, coach Fabian Sauer’s team celebrated supposedly staying in the league in the Oberliga Nord. With just one point from 22 games HSV was entitled to compete in the league for another year. Because: With Eschweger TSV and VfL Wanfried, who had withdrawn their teams before the season, two relegated teams had already been determined. And: No team from the regional league came down, as TSV Vellmar and MSG Körle/Guxhagen managed to stay in the league.
End of an era: Hünfeld's handball players no longer play in the top league
Now things are going down a league for the Haunestädter. How is this possible? Because a place had become available in the Melsungen/Fulda regional league. In addition to the sporting relegated HSG Waldhessen, HSG Jestädt/Grebendorf also withdrew to the district league. The candidate for the vacant BOL place was HSV's second team, which had finished third in the district league. The second-placed TG Rotenburg II was not eligible for promotion because their “first” also plays in the BOL. This constellation made it possible for HSV to secure a starting place in the district league.
In purely formal terms, the “First” withdrew from the league before the June 30th deadline in the 2025/2026 season, the “Second” is promoted to the BOL and the club is reporting a third team that will compete in the district league in 2026/2027. Because everything took place before the deadline of June 30th, HSV officially starts with the “first” in the BOL and with the “second” in the district league.
Curious: HSG Lohfelden/Vollmarshausen, third in BOL Kassel/Waldeck, takes Hünfeld's place in the top league. Both VfL Wanfried, who had lost the promotion relegation against SV Espenau, and TG Rotenburg declined. If the TGR had agreed, the Hünfeld project might have failed and the club would have remained in the top league. Going to the BOL means a turning point for HSV.
Players had expressed a desire to start in the BOL in the future
The past season was the 20th in a row in higher-class handball, and the club liked to praise itself as the “state league dinosaur”. In the 2017/2018 season, HSV even played in what was then the Oberliga, now the Regionalliga. After that, the downward trend began, class struggle instead of promotion was the rule. “It’s a big turning point and therefore feelings are divided,” says Konstantin Neuhann, the handball department manager at HSV.
However, the team has expressed their desire to play in the BOL – if a door opens. That was the case with the space that became available. “I can also understand the boys wanting to celebrate success again. This is especially important for the young players,” says Neuhann. HSV had to make a big change last season, was hardly competitive in the upper league and now wants to push ahead with the rebuilding in the district upper league. Because: The end of an era should be the starting signal for a successful future.
