From March 2027, new rules for driving e-scooters will apply. An overview of the innovations and important things that scooter users need to pay attention to – so that it doesn't get expensive.
From the train to the office or a few kilometers to meet friends – e-scooters are popular with many people for short journeys. For some, however, the companions are pure horror. The fact is: Even if they are reminiscent of toy scooters from childhood, they are motor vehicles to which traffic rules apply.
These rules have been changed again, but the changes will only apply from March 2027. “The regulations have been adapted more to cycling,” says Svea Hagen from Auto Club Europa (ACE). “This means they are clearer and more consistent, and there are fewer misunderstandings.” For some violations, e-scooter riders will have to dig deeper into their pockets in the future.
“It is important to know that the new rules are coming,” says Svea Hagen. “But at the moment you could theoretically be legally prosecuted if you implement rules that are not yet in force.” The ACE therefore points out what needs to be taken into account now in terms of road safety – and what only applies later.
