Subscription models planned for WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook
New premium stickers, a specific ringtone, better data analysis: anyone who wants to use more social media applications than before will soon be able to take out special subscriptions for the most popular social media platforms. What this brings to users and how much you have to pay for it – we have the first information.

The US group Meta is introducing a paid offer for its most important apps, which is intended to offer users more functions and content. Facebook Plus, Instagram Plus and WhatsApp Plus would be rolled out worldwide, Meta product manager Naomi Gleit announced in a video posted on Instagram. With the offer, the group obviously wants to free itself financially from its dependence on advertising revenue and open up additional financial opportunities.

According to the information, anyone who subscribes to Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus for a fee should be able to use additional functions. This includes improved analytics, story rewatch statistics and profile customization options, Gleit explained. WhatsApp Plus, in turn, focuses on personalization and will offer, among other things, premium stickers and individual ringtones.

Gleit did not provide any information about the pricing model. According to media reports, Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus will cost $3.99 (around €3.40) per month. WhatsApp Plus will therefore cost $2.99 per month. In the longer term, according to its product manager, Meta plans to bring together the various offerings under a single brand called Meta One.

In Europe, Meta had already introduced paid versions of Facebook and Instagram in 2023, which have no advertising. The US company wanted to comply with EU data protection regulations. Users have the choice between a paid offer without advertising and a free version with advertising.
