Pierre Deny (1956-2026) is dead.
The French actor, who was known to an international audience as Louis de Léon in the hit Netflix series “Emily in Paris”, died on Monday at the age of 69 from complications of the nerve disease ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). His daughters announced this in a moving statement, from which the French portal “Femme Actuelle” quoted, among others. “It is with deep shock that we announce the passing of Pierre Deny, which occurred this Monday as a result of a sudden and severe course of ALS.”

Actor from “Emily in Paris” dies of complications from ALS

In ALS, the nerve cells that control muscle movements die. The disease leads to progressive paralysis in the arms and legs and can ultimately also affect the respiratory muscles. The average life expectancy is two to five years. However, some sufferers live significantly longer with the disease – such as the astrophysicist Stephen Hawking (1942-2018), who lived with ALS for several decades.

The man behind Louis de Léon

Deny became known internationally primarily for his role as Louis de Léon in the third and fourth seasons of “Emily in Paris”, the Netflix series in which Lily Collins (37) shakes up the Parisian fashion world as the protagonist of the same name. Deny played the CEO of the fashion group JVMA – and thus the father of Nicholas de Léon (Paul Forman, 32), who in turn had a relationship with Emily's best friend Mindy Chen (Ashley Park, 34).

But anyone who only knows Deny from Netflix's Paris only knows a fraction of his career. In France he was a fixture on television – for decades. Perhaps his most significant engagement in his homeland was the role of Renaud Dumaze in the popular French daily series “Demain nous appartient” (known internationally as “Tomorrow is Ours”), in which he appeared in more than 500 episodes between 2017 and 2023.
